On Thanksgiving Day in 2010, I decided to upload my first video on a newly minted channel on YouTube using a purchase I had made on eBay. It was an old Apple Macintosh Classic and I wanted to video my first experience with it since the last time I used one when I was a kid. The following day, black friday, I went to my local Best Buy and purchased the new Need for Speed Hot Pursuit game and also decided to film an initial reaction/review of the game. This is where it all started for me, making videos on items that I purchased and I wanted to show to others.
The following year I started doing how-to videos on various topics. From hackintosh videos to PC hardware, things kept progressing in the realm of all things tech, and I also loved creating these videos. 2011 also saw my video creation really pickup, and I began making more videos. This was the year that I started noticing that I was growing a small audience, and it was a pleasure to watch it grow with each video I created.
As of the end of 2021, I have created over 560 videos on my TechGooch channel, and I do not see it ending anytime soon. In 2019 I began creating automotive reviews with Toyota, and in 2021 I have expanded to Lexus and Hyundai. In 2022 I am looking to expand further and create more unique content.
At the beginning of 2016 I decided to split my TechGooch channel into two parts, the main channel is where I would house my reviews and traditional type videos, and my new GeekSmart channel is where I would upload any how-to videos and tutorials that would eventually tie into products that I would be doing a review for on TechGooch. The interesting part is that while my main TechGooch channel has more subscribers, my GeekSmart channel actually drives more traffic.
I love to show how products are installed, setup and used, and GeekSmart allows me to do that in a direct way. While I traditionally don’t do a video on TechGooch anymore without using the product over a period of time, typically weeks, with GeekSmart the videos are from when you pull the product out of the box. It is different and straight forward.
While technically I started CampGeeks in 2011, about 7 months after I started TechGooch, I didn’t create a second video until mid 2016, and that was basically because I was working miltiple jobs back then and didn’t have enough time to focus on more yet. Eventually once I got GeekSmart up and going, I figured that I could lease some time to CampGeeks and do videos as I time allowed. It was a slow start, and is still not a weekly upload, but I love camping, hiking, backpacking and just being outdoors in general, so I have a lot of plans for CampGeeks.
My fourth channel actually came from a few sources. I love bicycles, and my first job was in a bike shop. After seeing how much I loved doing videos on CampGeeks, I really wanted to do some videos on bikes as well. However, I decided to create a stand alone channel for my bike videos outside of CampGeeks, so BikeGeeks was formed in 2017. It doesn’t get as many videos as the other channels, but that will slowly change as I focus on creating content more and more.
In 2020 I purchased my first motorcycle after not riding one for a very long time. I really wanted to do some videos on my motorcycle as well, and I figured it was a perfect fit with BikeGeeks. So, BikeGeeks is all bikes, motorized or not, and I look forward to what the future brings.
